Thinning hair

A widening parting, a receding front line, or more hair in the brush than there used to be. Timing decides the result more than the treatment does.

What it actually is

The commonest pattern is androgenetic, where follicles sensitive to a hormone by-product progressively produce finer, shorter hairs until they stop producing at all. There is a window while the follicle is still alive but underperforming, and treatment works inside that window. Once it has closed, nothing offered here brings it back.

What causes it

  • Inherited sensitivity in the follicle, which affects both men and women and follows different patterns in each.
  • Telogen effluvium, a temporary shed two to three months after illness, surgery, childbirth or severe stress, which usually recovers on its own.
  • Iron deficiency and thyroid disorder, both common, both easily tested and both worth ruling out first.
  • Traction from tight styles, extensions or repeated tension in the same place, which becomes permanent if it goes on long enough.

Before you book anything

Patchy circular bald spots, an itchy or scarring scalp, or shedding with any other symptom should go to a GP or a dermatologist before it comes to us. Some of those causes are treatable and one of them is time critical.

Nothing on this page is a diagnosis. It is what we would say in the room, written down so you can read it before deciding whether to come in.

What treatment can do

Improve the blood supply and signalling around follicles that are still alive, which thickens existing hair and can restart follicles that have recently gone quiet. Density measurably improves for most people who start early. We photograph a marked scalp area at the same distance every time, because self assessment of hair is famously unreliable in both directions.

What it cannot do

We cannot regrow hair from a follicle that has been gone for years, and a shiny scalp with no visible fine hair means it has. Transplant surgery is the answer there and we will say so. We also cannot beat the underlying process, so this is maintenance rather than cure.

Treatments for thinning hair

PRP Hair Restoration

Your own concentrated platelets injected into the scalp to support thinning follicles.

From £350

Exosome Hair Therapy

Signalling molecules applied to the scalp after microneedling, to support follicle activity.

What a course usually looks like

Three or four sessions a month apart, then maintenance every four to six months. Judge it at six months against the first photograph, not at six weeks in the bathroom mirror. Results plateau and then hold for as long as maintenance continues.

Course pricing is lower than the same sessions bought one at a time, and spreading the cost is available over three months on anything above £300.

Where to start

Bring a photograph of it at its worst.

Most concerns look different in clinic lighting at eleven in the morning than they do at home at night. A photograph on your phone is genuinely useful and we would rather see one than take your word for it.
