Cellulite and body skin texture

Dimpling on the thighs and buttocks. Very common, not related to weight or fitness in the way people assume, and the concern on this list where honest expectation setting matters most.

What it actually is

Cellulite is a structural effect. Fibrous bands run from the muscle layer through the fat to the underside of the skin, and where those bands are short they tether the skin down while the fat between them pushes up. That produces the dimpled surface. It is present in most adult women regardless of body fat, and the tethering bands are the reason it does not respond to weight loss.

What causes it

  • The arrangement of the fibrous bands, which is anatomical and largely inherited.
  • Skin thickness and elasticity, which is why it becomes more visible with age.
  • Circulation and lymphatic drainage in the area, which is the part treatment can influence.
  • Hormones, which is why it is common in women and rare in men.

Before you book anything

If the dimpling is on one leg only, appeared suddenly, or the leg is swollen and warm, that is not cellulite and it needs a doctor the same day.

Nothing on this page is a diagnosis. It is what we would say in the room, written down so you can read it before deciding whether to come in.

What treatment can do

Improve circulation and drainage in the area, soften the appearance of the dimpling, and improve the quality of the skin over the top. Improvement is real and it is modest. Photographs in identical lighting are the only way to judge it, which is why we take them.

What it cannot do

No treatment offered here releases the fibrous bands, so no treatment here removes cellulite. Anyone claiming to remove it is describing a surgical release, which is a different procedure in a different setting. We would rather lose the booking than pretend.

What a course usually looks like

A course of six to twelve sessions, one or two a week, then maintenance monthly. The effect fades if maintenance stops, usually within about three months. Anyone quoting you a permanent result from a course of massage or radiofrequency is wrong.

Course pricing is lower than the same sessions bought one at a time, and spreading the cost is available over three months on anything above £300.

Where to start

Bring a photograph of it at its worst.

Most concerns look different in clinic lighting at eleven in the morning than they do at home at night. A photograph on your phone is genuinely useful and we would rather see one than take your word for it.
