How it works
An applicator draws the tissue into a cup and holds it at a low temperature for the length of the cycle. Fat cells are more sensitive to cold than the skin, nerves and vessels around them, so they are damaged selectively and then cleared by the body over the following weeks. Because the clearance is gradual, the change appears slowly rather than on the day.
Typical course
One or two cycles per area, with the second at least eight weeks after the first. Final result is judged at twelve weeks.
Who it is not suitable for
Not for anyone with cryoglobulinaemia, cold agglutinin disease or paroxysmal cold haemoglobinuria. Not appropriate if you are pregnant, if you have a hernia at the treatment site, or if you are looking for weight loss rather than contouring.

Questions people ask
How much fat does one cycle remove?
Published figures for this class of device sit around a fifth to a quarter of the fat layer in the treated area. That is a change in shape rather than in weight, and the scales will usually not move.
Will the fat come back somewhere else?
The treated cells are cleared and do not return. The cells elsewhere in your body are unaffected, so if you gain weight afterwards you will gain it in your usual pattern, including partly in the treated area.
Is it painful?
The first few minutes of suction and cold are uncomfortable, then the area goes numb for the rest of the cycle. The massage at the end is the part most people mention.
